The best things to do in Sedona with a group of friends are a jeep tour into the red rocks, a spa afternoon, an early walk on the easy Bell Rock Pathway, a guided vortex meditation and a slow evening in Tlaquepaque's courtyards. Go in spring, March to May, or in October and November, when highs run from the high 60s to the low 80s and the trails are pleasant in the morning.
Our handbook puts it in one line: red rock mesas and courtyards that move at a desert siesta pace.
When is the best time to visit Sedona?
March to May, and October to November. NOAA's 30 year averages for the Sedona station put the average high at 68 degrees in March, 75 in April and 84 in May. October averages 79 and November 67. Nights in those months fall to the 40s and low 50s, so pack a layer.
Summer is hot. June averages 94 degrees, July 97 and August 94. June is also the driest month, with about a sixth of an inch of rain. That is why our Summer Edition sets its weekend in early June. If you go then, hike at sunrise and save the afternoon for the spa. Rain comes back in July and August.
What does a weekend in Sedona cost?
From $175 per person per day, by our handbook's estimate, with 2 friends sharing a room. Our 2 night plan comes to about $400 to $750 each, depending on whether you share. The stay decides most of it, and the big resorts add a daily resort fee. Check before you go.

Which Sedona hikes are easy, and which are hard?
Bell Rock Pathway No. 96 is the easy one. The Forest Service rates it easy and family friendly. It runs 3.5 miles one way, so walk as far as you like and turn back. You need a Red Rock Pass or an America the Beautiful pass to park there.
Cathedral Rock Trail No. 170 is rated strenuous. It is only 1.1 miles round trip, but much of it is a scramble up bare rock. Devil's Bridge Trail No. 120 is rated moderate.
A Red Rock Pass is $5 a day or $15 a week. A senior America the Beautiful pass works instead at many Sedona sites.
Vortex tours, meditation and a spa afternoon
Visit Sedona names the four best known vortex sites: Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon. Its own line on Sedona is short. "It is a cathedral without walls." You can see the sites on your own, or with a guide who explains what people come for.
One Tribe Tours runs vortex tours of 4 to 7 hours. Groups of 8 or more should contact them before booking.

Jeep tours and a balloon at sunrise
